Total cart-before-horse situation! (Read on to see why)
Had a great day delivering the fourth iteration of ๐๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐ข๐ญ: ๐๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ & ๐๐๐๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง with the Institute of Internal Communication to attendees from software, energy, utilities, retail, education, insurance and the care sector, plus someone joining from as far afield as South Africa. ๐
One of the key topics we discussed was the cart-before-horse situation. Why?
Because people are using AI:
โ Before governance
โ Before usage policies
โ Before training
Meanwhile, adoption is flying at full throttle. ๐
And hereโs what weโre hearing.
Emails are being copied and pasted straight from AI tools, wreaking havoc with tone of voice and style guidelines. Readers are spotting AI-generated content faster than an F1 pit crew changes a tyre. ๐ฆ
So alongside exploring the capabilities of AI in comms, we rolled up our sleeves and made a start on governance together.
๐ฅ Hot tip for internal communicators:
If the governance conversation hasnโt started in your organisation, lead it. โ
The role of the internal communicator is evolving. AI governance in comms should be part of that evolution, along with training employees to ensure consistency and credibility in their comms. ๐
Attendees left armed with practical checklists and takeaways from deep discussions on topics including: appropriateness of AI usage, transparency and honesty, ownership and accountability and more – ready to create their own guidelines. ๐ก
(BTW, Iโve been watching a lot of F1 lately with my husband. ๐)
While AI is hurtling at F1 speed, governance is still harnessing the horse. ๐ด
