A brilliant outcome from the Institute of Internal Communication member session I ran last week: โ€œ๐€๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ – ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐…๐ฅ๐ž๐ฑ ๐…๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ: ๐…๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž-๐‘๐ž๐š๐๐ฒ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐…๐ข๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐“๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐žโ€.

๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ ๐š๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฌ๐จ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐œ๐ก ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐š๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ง๐จ๐ฐ?
Because the pace of change is only accelerating and the rapid rise of AI is reshaping how we work. We now need a new capability: ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ๐๐š๐ฒ ๐š๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ.

Not the capital-A Agile methodology, although the essence is the same when done well. ๐˜‰๐˜ถ๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ตโ€™๐˜ด ๐˜ข ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜คโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll be talking on this at the IoIC Change Comms Conference next week.

Back to lowercase-a agility. This needs to become a core capability โ€“ the mindset and habits that help you flex and adapt when everything keeps moving.

Agility in internal comms isnโ€™t about working faster or squeezing more into your day! ๐˜๐˜ตโ€™๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ต ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต. Itโ€™s knowing how to adjust when plans shift and how to respond when peopleโ€™s needs evolve.

In the session, we started with mindset โ€“ our own. Agility begins with our behaviour before we influence anyone elseโ€™s. Then we explored six practical Agile-inspired tools. Yes, designed for tech teams, but incredibly useful in our everyday work too. I shared how I use these tools myself, because ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ด ๐˜ถ๐˜ฑ ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ด๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ด. It takes practice, especially if you love a polished draft, but it does pay off!

Weโ€™re only at the start of an AI revolution. Transformation success rates were already struggling and AI will amplify that. But organisations canโ€™t change without people โ€“ and people canโ€™t change without clear, timely and human communication. ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’‚๐’•โ€™๐’” ๐’˜๐’‰๐’š ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’“๐’๐’๐’† ๐’๐’‡ ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’Š๐’๐’•๐’†๐’“๐’๐’‚๐’ ๐’„๐’๐’Ž๐’Ž๐’–๐’๐’Š๐’„๐’‚๐’•๐’๐’“ ๐’Š๐’” ๐’†๐’™๐’‘๐’‚๐’๐’…๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ. Weโ€™re becoming sense-makers, AI producers and editors, advisors, navigators, storytellers, content curators, strategic partners and, above all, ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ.

Session outcomes
At the start, attendees rated their adaptability as:

4/5: 38%
5/5: 19%

After 90 mins:
3/5: 0%
4/5: 65%
5/5: 35%

And 100% said they were ready to make agility their new superpower. A fantastic outcome!
